Introducing the 2021 NSMC internship class

It’s that time again - we’re ready to kick off another year of the NSMC internship. We are excited to introduce the internship class of 2021. They are a diverse group of 36 individuals and hail from 12 countries across 5 continents. Learn their names because they will be producing the visual abstracts, journal clubs, blog posts, tweetorials, and new for 2021 podcasts!

I am an Internal Medicine resident about to embark on an exciting journey as a future Nephrology fellow in Houston! I am looking forward to delving into an educational, collaborative, and fun experience while combining my favorite fields nephrology and social media.

I am physician, Masters degree of medicine candidate in China Medical University. Currently, I am looking to pursue residency training in the US. I am interested in many areas of nephrology- lupus nephritis, AKI, and CRRT. In my free time, I enjoy jogging and watching stand up comedy. George Carlin is my favorite comedian.

Alicja Rosolowska (@Alunieczka)

I’m an attending nephrologist in Białystok, Poland. I enjoy challenging nephrology cases, kidney biopsy, reading, running and can throw a great party (NephMadness 2019 best party winner). I’m an avid Twitter user, joined NSMC to finally start creating content and because I believe teamwork, fun, and learning is the best medical trio.

Yoshinosuke Shimamura (@SQWONsLKxEUwhHe)

I am a nephrologist attending at Teine Keijinkai Medical Center. I am involved in teaching medical residents and fellows. My goals for the NSMC internship is to be involved in international collaboration and to gain proficiency with social media to gain further experience as an educator. My research interests are glomerular disease, onconephrology, and hemodialysis. In my free time, I am an avid marathon runner, and enjoy learning foreign languages, including Chinese, Korean, and Spanish.

I am a clinical epidemiologist, and I’m currently a postdoctoral associate at the Clinical and Transnational Research Accelerator at Yale School of Medicine. My research interests include hypertension, chronic kidney disease, disparities and data science.

Bourne Auguste (@BourneAuguste)

I am a nephrologist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, Canada and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto. I’m trained in home dialysis and quality improvement methodology, holding a masters of science degree in system leadership and innovation. I focus on enriching patient experiences in home dialysis through innovative methods; using acute peritoneal dialysis for patients with cardio-renal syndrome by inserting PD catheters with ultrasound guidance at the bedside and increasing access to care in this vulnerable population.

I am a nephrology fellow at the University of Connecticut with an interest in glomerular disease and electrolyte disorders. I have a passion for teaching and am a previous participant of the ASN Kidney Stars program. Outside of medicine, I enjoy traveling, cooking and am an avid graphic designer.

Janewit Wongboonsin (@JanewitWong)

I did my medical school from Siriraj Hospital in Thailand. I then enjoyed learning nephrology through working with Dr. Humphreys (@HumphreysLab) and colleagues in University of Minnesota where I did my internal medicine residency, chief residency and Master of Clinical Research. I am currently a first year nephrology fellow at BWH/MGH and will be working with Dr. Matthew Sampson @kidneyomicsamps in the area of nephro-genomics.

Having completed my Diplomate of National Board Degree in Nephrology from Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital, Nadiad, I am currently pursuing clinical fellowship in adult nephrology at University of Toronto. I am fond of creative medical education and want to be an academic content creator who can influence and educate people across the world. My special interests focus on renal transplant immunobiology, interventional nephrology, and onconephrology.

Aarthi Muthukumaran (@Aarthi_Dr)

I am a newly qualified nephrologist from Madras Medical College, Chennai. I completed my Internal Medicine residency at St. John's Medical College, Bangalore and made my debut in Twitter with the WCN 2020 poster talks. I am interested in glomerular diseases, pregnancy in renal diseases, onconephrology and kidney transplantation. I joined the NSMC internship to hone my visual abstract skills and to collaborate with like-minded people on nephrology social media and disseminate scientific information effectively. I am an ardent animal lover, like to explore new places & cultures in my free time and practice Bharathanatyam dance, badminton and yoga to keep in good shape.

I am an assistant professor (Nephrology) at the Institute of Nephro-urology, Bengaluru, India. I enjoy teaching medicine residents and nephrology fellows. I am interested in almost all fields of nephrology- glomerular diseases, peritoneal dialysis, hemodialysis. When I am not working, its either traveling or cooking. I like zumba/bollywood dance for my workout routine.

I am senior specialist physician, consultant nephrologist and senior lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana. I am the chairman of the young nephrologist committee of the African Association of Nephrology and the founder/director of Kidney Health International, a non-profit for kidney health promotion. I am a researcher and a senior atlantic fellow for health equity.

I received my MD degree from the University of Buenos Aires School of Medicine, Argentina, and my MPH from the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University. I am the division director of pediatric nephrology & hypertension at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY and professor of pediatrics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. I am the current chair of the ASPN communications committee, a member of the IPNA communications/social media committee and an elected member of the executive committee of the AAP section of nephrology.

I am an assistant professor at the University of Colorado and a pediatric nephrologist at Children’s Hospital Colorado where I serve as the medical director of dialysis. I am a first year nephrology fellow at University of Colorado, former Maine Med resident/chief resident, Tufts Med alumni, and lifetime New Englander. My clinical interests include immigrant health, health disparities, and social justice. I am hoping to use the social media skills learned in NSMC to augment advocacy efforts to improve dialysis and kidney care for immigrant patients with kidney failure.

I am a second year nephrology fellow at University of South Florida in Tampa. I am originally from Barranquilla, Colombia a beautiful city located in the north coast of the country. Since being a chief resident during residency and chief nephrology fellow, I have had the unique opportunity to contribute to various educational activities. I am originally from Karachi, Pakistan and currently a second year nephrology fellow at the Cleveland Clinic. I am passionate about transplant nephrology and will start my transplant nephrology fellowship next year at at the same institution. When I am not deciphering glomerulopathies and working up AKIs, I spend my time doing new born and portrait photography. I aim to use the social media platform to connect, collaborate and learn to teach the next generations of nephrons.

I love teaching and am an enthusiastic learner.  My areas of interest are hypertension, critical care nephrology and kidney transplantation. I am an Australian trained Nephrologist currently doing my second year of general nephrology fellowship at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA, and enjoying every bit of it. I have a special interest in glomerulopathies and kidney transplantation and actively have presented multiple times at national/international conferences. I have been involved in teaching medical students, interns, and residents and am looking at obtaining expertise with social media to grow as an educator. I am quite excited to be a part of NSMC which I think is an excellent platform to interact with and learn from the eminent Nephrology community. In my free time, I love to spend time with family, cook traditional meals and travel around the globe.

Keia Sanderson (@drkeia)

I am an assistant professor pediatric nephrologist and pediatric dialysis director at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, NC. My career goal, is to improve early recognition of kidney disease in children, especially in pediatric populations disproportionately affected by CKD. My research, more specifically focuses is to use precision medicine to develop risk prediction models and evidenced based clinical-decision support systems to most appropriately screen, identify, and risk stratify children at increased risk for CKD.
