NSMC Official Announcement

We are excited to announce the fourth class of nephrology social medial collective (NSMC) internship. But more exceptional than the number of applicants was the quality of the applicants we received. In the past we primarily received applications from people who had either not engaged in social media or was only using it as a passive consumer. This year we received a tremendous number of applications from people who applied who were already active consumers to #NephTwitter. This was a welcome surprise and is indicative of how active robust our online community is. Whittling this cohort talented applications to a tight group of a dozen proved to be more of a task than the faculty was up to, so this year the NSMC social media internship is doubling in size (and with this expansion we were unable to take accept all the applicants who would have made excellent interns). We encourage anyone who didn’t get a spot to reapply next year.Please join the entire NSMC faculty in congratulating and welcoming our 25 interns from all over the word:

North America

Manasi Bapat

Manasi Bapat is originally from Mumbai, India. She is a second year nephrology fellow at Icahn School of Medicine, Mount Sinai, NY, USA. Her areas of interest in nephrology are glomerulonephritis and hypertension. She enjoys medical writing and reading medical books. One of her favorites is Atul Gawande. She loves seeing patients in outpatient setting, getting to know their stories and caring for them through different stages of health. Her hobbies include traveling, hiking, reading, and cooking.

Justin Berk

Justin Berk is a third year resident in the combined internal medicine - pediatrics urban health residency program at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He was born in Tennessee, raised in Texas, and received his BA and MPH from Yale University with his MD and MBA coming from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. Though he appreciates the kidneys, he plans for a career in primary care and general medical education in an urban health setting.  

Natasha N. Dave

Natasha N. Dave is a California native and the current chief nephrology fellow at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. As her Twitter profile suggests, she loves electrolytes and is deeply interested in peritoneal dialysis, insulin resistance and glomerulonephritis. She enjoys running, hiking, yoga, fine dining, and traveling.

Samira Farouk

Samira Farouk is a chief fellow and transplant nephrology fellow at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai in New York City. She is an alumnus of Princeton University and Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, both in her home state of New Jersey. Though Samira's residency and fellowship training have turned her into a New Yorker, she will always stay true to her roots as a Philadelphia Eagles fan.

Diana Mina

Diana Mina is a second year clinical nephrology fellow at University of California, San Francisco and will be joining a private practice group in Dallas, Texas after graduation this summer. Her interest is in mastering general nephrology with the goal of providing high quality and compassionate care to patients in her new community. She is working to network on social media and at conferences with colleagues from around the globe. She has especially enjoyed educational forums like GlomCon and NephMadness. She hopes to get more involved with #NephJC, and is working on several #MedEd projects (including a project aimed at increasing trainee interest in nephrology, and another about landmark clinical trials). 

Sayna Norouzi

Sayna Norouzi is an internal medicine resident at Saint Louis University and a future nephrology fellow at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. She loves all areas of nephrology, but especially interested in AKI, and management of hypertension in CKD patients.

James Novak

James Novak is an associate professor of medicine at Wayne State University. He is the program director for the nephrology fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. He serves as associate editor for Advances in Chronic Kidney Disease and has written questions and curricula for MKSAP, NephSAP, and KSAP. His interests include kidney physiology and medical education, and he was awarded the subspecialty teaching physician of the year award for 6 consecutive years at Wayne State University.

Angel Ortiz

Angel Ortiz is a nephrology fellow at the National Medical Center “La Raza” with the support of the National Autonomous University of México in México City, México. He received his medical degree from the Superior School of Medicine of the National Polytechnic Institute at México. He was moved by the high incidence and social impact of kidney disease in México. This lead him to embrace new ways to acquire and share medical information on high impact topics as acute kidney injury and glomerulopathies. He enjoys of nature, trekking, astronomy, and spending time with his family and friends 

Nimra Sarfaraz

Nimra Sarfaraz is a private practice nephrologist that recently joined Dallas Renal Group. She is from New York and trained there as well. She is passionate about patient advocacy and helping those less fortunate through volunteering and community education.

Ankur Shah

Ankur Shah is a second year renal fellow at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he has developed an interest in home dialysis. He became interested in social media after meeting Matt Sparks the NBLU in 2017 and has been mentored locally by Nathaniel Reisinger. Outside of medicine his interests include photography, autocross, and great restaurants!

Michelle Starr

Michelle Starr is a pediatric nephrology fellow at Seattle Children's Hospital in Seattle, WA. Her research interests include neonatal acute kidney injury and premature kidney disease. She is also a John E. Lewy Foundation Advocacy Scholar through the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology, where her advocacy work focuses on food insecurity in medically underserved patient populations.

Brian Stotter

Brian Stotter is a pediatric nephrology fellow at Boston Children's Hospital in Boston, MA. He enjoys providing care for children with kidney disease and has a broad range of clinical interests, including nephrotic syndrome, hypertension, and acid/base and electrolyte disorders in children. Brian is also interested in medical education and learning to use social media for teaching pediatric nephrology to medical students and residents. He is the founder of a new pediatric nephrology blog titled "Ins & Outs".

Beje Thomas

Beje Thomas is a transplant nephrologist at the MedStar Georgetown University Transplant Institute in Washington, DC. He did his nephrology fellowship at the University of Connecticut before heading to the Medical University of South Carolina to complete a transplant nephrology fellowship. Besides the exciting world of transplantation, his interests include medical education, trying to be a foodie, and watching Philadelphia-based sports teams. 

Lekha Tummalapalli

Lekha Tummalapalli is a first-year nephrology fellow at University of California, San Francisco. She completed her internal medicine residency at Mount Sinai Hospital, and medical degree and MBA degrees at Harvard University in Boston, MA. Her background is in quality improvement, high value care, and healthcare delivery. She is interested in changing physician behavior through interventions to reduce utilization and improve evidence-based ordering practices.

India

Divya Bajpai

Divya Bajpai is an assistant professor and transplant nephrologist in the Department of Nephrology at KEM Hospital in Mumbai, India. She enjoys teaching medical students, cycling, travelling and origami. She is interested in pragmatic research in areas of lupus nephritis and thrombotic microangiopathies. She is also working to improve kidney care delivery in resource limited settings.

Sanjeev Nair

Sanjeev Nair is an associate professor at Saveetha University in Chennai, India. He is a nephrologist and transplant physician with interests in kidney transplantation, glomerular diseases, and preventive nephrology. He volunteers with the TANKER Foundation’s screening and awareness Program. He is a passionate bibliophile, political junkie and hopes to write a book someday.

Aakash Shingada

Aakash Shingada is a nephrology fellow at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi, India. He completed his medical degree at the Seth GS Medical College in Mumbai, India. He was mentored by Dr Farokh Udwadia. He is a self-proclaimed “nephro-enthusiast” with interests in kidney transplantation, dialysis, and critical care nephrology. He is a foodie who loves travelling, cricket, and reading.    

Mayuri Trivedi

Mayuri Trivedi is a practising nephrologist and kidney transplant surgeon at P.D. Hinduja Hospital and Medical Research Centre in Mumbai, India. Her areas of interest include glomerulonephritis, and critical care nephrology. She describes herself as a complete bibliophile. Shis is trained in Indian classical dance (Kathak) and is currently learning to be a singer as well.  

Myanmar

Mya Htwe Nge

Mya Htwe Nge in a nephrologist from from Myanmar. She received her medical degree from the University of Medicine, Yangon, Myanmar. She also received her MRCP (UK) in 2015 and Dr.Med.Sc from University of Medicine in Yangon. She is currently working as a junior consultant nephrologist in the Department of Nephrology at the Yangon Specialty Hospital in Myanmar.

Egypt

Mohamed Elrggal

Mohamed Elrggal is currently a nephrology fellow at the Kidney and Urology Center in Alexandria, Egypt. His clinical interest includes conservative management of advanced CKD and Incremental hemodialysis.

Europe

Michelle Lim

Michelle Lim is a specialty registrar in nephrology based in Dundee, Scotland. She grew up in Malaysia and wants to make #FOAMed accessible to all who want it. She also wants to connect with people all over the world while she's at it. She is also an unapologetic geek and spends her free time being inspired by photography, tinkering with photoshop, and planning her next adventures.  

Laura Slattery

Laura Slattery is currently a nephrology registrar at St Vincent's University Hospital in Dublin, Ireland. She is originally from county Offaly. She obtained her medical degree from the University Limerick Graduate Entry Medical School in Ireland in 2014 and completed a BSc from the University College Dublin in 2010. Outside of medicine she has an interest in classical singing and competes at a national and international level. She is looking forward to the challenges and learning opportunities that the NSMC internship will bring.  

Sinead Stoneman

Sinead Stoneman  is a geriatric and general internal medicine registrar in Ireland, and pursuing further specialist training in nephrology. She is interested in all aspects of nephrology, particularly acute kidney injury, hypertension, acid-base disturbance, cardiorenal syndrome and geriatric-nephrology. She loves watching movies, music, cycling and walking her  dogs.

Oceania

Sarah Gleeson

Sarah Gleeson is a dual trainee in nephrology and obstetric medicine in Auckland, New Zealand. She studied in Dublin, Ireland before moving to the other side of the world. In her spare time she enjoys travelling, running, and overindulging in tea.

Kate Robson

Kate Robson is a consultant nephrologist and PhD candidate at Monash Health in Melbourne, Australia. She joins the Kitching Lab in 2018 to investigate the immune response in anti-glomerular basement membrane disease. She studied history of medicine at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, and is an accomplished cellist with Corpus Medicorum.
