NSMC Internship Application

Join us in 2024 and sharpen your social media skills

DEADLINE January 21, 2024 (midnight EDT)

This is the NSMC…

The Nephrology Social Media Collective (NSMC) is a collection of websites, initiatives, games, and conferences, that represent nephrology’s social media present and future. Members of the NSMC generate some of the most compelling nephrology content in the world.

Everything on the internet is made by people and the NSMC Social Media Internship helps train and season those people.

The NSMC was established in 2015 with the goal of training doctors to effectively harness social media in order to be the next leaders in nephrology and medicine. Being able to communicate through social media, newsletters, collaborative team-software…

These may be exciting and new today.

They will be table stakes tomorrow.

The NSMC Internship is a year-long commitment. Interns will be divided into 3 pods and will spend time in 3 different rotations primarily focused on NephJC. We expect that you will spend about 2-3 hours every 2 weeks on the NSMC. We ask that you fully commit when signing up. If you are unable to commit this time. Please DO NOT sign up.

  1. Blog rotation focused on writing NephJC summaries (KI reports and RFN)

  2. Graphical communication rotation focused on NephJC visual abstracts. (And kidney medicine, KI reports VAs as well).

  3. In development (podcasts, social media, Landmark)

This year we are also partnering with the International Society of Nephrology (ISN).

All interns (and faculty) must abide by the NSMC code of conduct.

Mythri Shankar, MD is the program director of the NSMC and Matthew A. Sparks, MD is the associate program director.

Application requirements

  1. CV

  2. Personal Statement

  3. Examples of social media use

  4. 1 letter of recommendation (or loophole). We have a loophole because we realize that many places in the world do not routinely use letters of recommendation or you may feel like it will be difficult to get a letter.

*Use this link for your letter writer to submit your letter of recommendation.

The only way to learn medicine is to practice medicine. The only way to learn how to harness social media is to practice doing it.
